University of Georgia - M.S. in Nutritional Sciences

The University of Georgia offers an online Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences with a focus in Community Nutrition. There are 30 total credits including a final capstone course. Example core courses include Nutrition Health and Aging, Nutrition and Obesity Across the Lifespan and Community Nutrition. There are electives offered in Food Sanitation and Safety and Sports Nutrition. Graduates from the program go on to work in a variety of roles such as school nutrition directors and outreach professionals.

Students must submit three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose and official transcripts to apply. There are fall, spring and summer admission dates. No GRE required.

Georgia State - M.S. Coordinated Program in Nutrition and Health Sciences

Georgia State offers an online hybrid MS in Health Sciences with a concentration in nutrition. The coordinated program is one of the few ACEND accredited programs in the Southeast. It consists of both online and on-campus work. There is a minimum of 36 semester hours plus 1,010 hours of supervised practice required to graduate. However, the degree can be completed in fewer hours for students with an undergraduate nutrition degree and DPD verification. Classes include Nutritional Genomics, Advanced Normal Nutrition and Nutrition Research Methods. Students have the option to complete a thesis project or non-thesis masters project in the final semester.

To be eligible for admission, students without a DPD verification statement must take certain prerequisite courses. Pre requisites include Organic and Inorganic Chemistry as well as Human Anatomy and Physiology. Application deadlines are on January and May 15th. No GRE required.

Keiser University - MS in Nutrition with Distance Learning Internship

Keiser University has a Master of Science in Nutrition with a Distance Learning Internship. The Masters courses can be completed online. Coursework includes Trends in Therapeutic Nutrition, Nutrition Assessment and Quality Management in Healthcare. Master's coursework and the internship run concurrently. The program takes 12 to 24 months to complete and consists of at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice. The emphasis of the internship is in Community Nutrition. The MS-DI is ACEND accredited.

Program prerequisities include an undergraduate degree and completion of an ACEND-accredited DPD courses. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA. The GMAT and GRE are not required. Two letters of recommendation are also needed.

Life University - B.S. in Dietetics

Life University has a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics degree. The program is ACEND accredited. The program's mission is to provide diverse didactic courses in biological, nutrition and dietetics science. There are a total of 180 credit hours. Required courses include Nutrition Education, Biochemistry, Advanced Nutrition and Microbiology. Life also offers unique electives such as Pharmacology and Drug Interaction, Medical Terminology and Nutrition and Culture.

Students must submit official high school transcripts along with the official application documents. Life University no longer requires the SAT, ACT or GRE scores. Classes are offered on a quarterly system, thus there are four different application deadlines in December, March, June and September.

Augusta University- MS-Dietetic Internship

Augusta University has a 21-month ACEND accredited MS-Dietetic Internship program. The program includes 1,000 hours of supervised practice and 190 hours of didactic classroom instruction. Student interns work 32-40 hours per week to meet their internship hours and have a weekly supervised didact class on Monday evenings. Students will rotate through various supervised practice settings throughout the Augusta area. Rotation sites include bariatric clinics, schools, public health departments, long term care facilities and more. The program accepts 12-16 students each year. Students do not receive a stipend. In addition to the internship, MS coursework includes Pathophysiology, Maternal and Child Nutrition and Nutritional Genomics.

To be considered for admission, graduate student interns must submit their DPD verification statement. Final transcripts, an application fee and resumes must be submitted.

University of Georgia - BS in Dietetics

The University of Georgia has a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics degree. The DPD program is ACEND accredited and prepares students to for a career in dietetics. UGA offers a unique course called Peer Nutrition Educators which allows students to work alongside campus Registered Dietitians. These students are trained by the University Health Center and UGA Dining Services Registered Dietitians to provide nutrition presentations and advisement to other UGA students. This training counts as practicum for Dietetic majors and allows them to experience what it is like to be an RD.

Upon completing the DPD, students are eligible to apply for the dietetic internship. The Student Dietetic Association at UGA hosts a yearly event to support students through the application. THE STDA at UGA also holds various service projects and networking events for nutrition students.

Undergraduates applying to the program can complete the Common Application to apply. Transfer students must complete a separate transfer application.

  • What to know about becoming a Registered Dietitian in in Georgia

    To become a RDN in Georgia, there are a few steps required. The first step is to earn a degree in the area of nutrition and obtain a verification statement from ACEND. As of January 1, 2024 a masters degree will be the minimum requirement to sit for the CDR exam. While the masters degree does not have to be in nutrition, the DPD courses must be completed.

    Once the ACEND program is complete, graduates are eligible to apply for the dietetic internship. Both individuals who have earned a master’s degree or bachelor’s degree must complete the DI to become an RDN. ACEND also offers coordinate programs which combines the DPD coursework and internship.

    After completing the degree and internship, there is an exam administered by the CDR. Those who pass the exam will earn the official title of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

    Georgia requires RDs to apply for licensure. There is a Georgia Board of Examiners of Licensed Dietitians Application for Licensure that must be submitted along with a $75 application fee. Once the application is processed, RDs obtain the title of “licensed dietitian” in Georgia.

    The license must be renewed every two years along with a $50 fee. During each two year licensing period, 30 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) must be completed.

    Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the leading organization for nutrition professionals in Georgia. GAND is an affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The organization offers scholarship support for dietetic students and hosts conferences and webinars for members.
