There are 3 universities that offer a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition. These programs are a four-year track leading towards a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics Degree. After graduation, students can apply to an ACEND supervised practice program, also known as a Dietetic Internship. As of January 1, 2024 the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a Master's degree to become a RD.

Of the online ACEND accredited programs in New Jersey, two offer a Master's degree in Nutrition. There are other online nutrition degrees available, however they are not accredited by ACEND.

One common online Nutrition degree is the online Master of Science in Nutrition. Courses include Research in Nutrition and Dietetics, Medical Nutrition Therapy and Nutrition Counseling.

Rutgers University- MS in Clinical Nutrition

Rutgers University has a new online Master's degree in Clinical Nutrition. There are 42 total credits. The program includes 31 credits of online coursework and sessions and 11 credits of supervised experiential learning. The supervised experiential learning component takes place in both acute and longterm settings. Remote students must be willing to relocate for the supervised learning clerkships. The program takes 16 months to complete.

Example online courses include Nutrition Assessment and Physical Exam, Global and Public Health Nutrition and a Pharmacology Seminar. There is also a final capstone project required to graduate. Students must submit their official resume, DPD verification statement, letters of recommendation and transcripts to apply. No GRE needed.

Saint Elizabeth University- MS in Nutrition/Dietetic Internship

Saint Elizabeth University has an ACEND accredited MS in Nutrition and Dietetic Internship Program (MS/DI). There are 38 total credits. The program includes 20 credits of online courseworks and 18 DI credits. Example courses include Health Promotion and Aging, Integrative Nutrition and Public Health Nutrition. The DI consists of 1,000 plus supervised practice hours in clinical, community and food service settings. There is a final capstone requirement needed to graduate.

Applicants must participate in the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Service (DICAS) to apply. Students must also submit a resume, letters of recommendation, transcripts and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0

New Jersey has many ACEND accredited nutrition programs offered on campus. The programs include a Bachelors of Science in Didactic Programs in Dietetics, Masters of Science in Nutrition, and combined BS/ MS. Montclair State University- BS and MS in Nutrition

Montclair State University offers a BS in Nutrition with three concentrations: Applied Nutrition and Wellness, Food Science or Food Systems. Students who complete the DPD courses will receive an ACEND verification statement upon graduation. To be admitted into the Dietetics program, students need an overall GPA of 3.2 and must complete the necessary prerequisites. Example courses include Nutrition Counseling, Applied Microbiology and Meal Design and Management.

Montclair State University also offers a MS in Nutrition and Food Science. It is a 32 credit program that includes four core Nutrition and Food Science courses, one Research Method class, an Elective, Practicum, Three courses in Nutrition Education and a final thesis. This program does not prepare students to become RDs, however students can complete the MS in Nutrition and the DPD simultaneously. To be admitted, students need a minimum 3.2 overall GPA, letters of recommendation and transcripts. No GRE is needed.

Rowan University - Coordinated BS/MS Program in Dietetics

Rowan University has a coordinated BS/MS program in Nutrition and Dietetics. The program is ACEND accredited and includes 1,000 hours of supervised practice along with lecture-based courses. The supervised practice takes place in various settings, including wellness centers, schools, long term care facilities and hospitals. Upon completion of the 3 year coordinated program, students will earn both a BS and MS degree.

To be considered for admission, students must submit unofficial transcripts, a professional resume and 2 letters or recommendations. No GRE needed.

Rutgers University - BS in Nutrition

Rutgers University has many BS degrees in Nutrition. Students can choose between the Dietetics, Biomedical Nutrition, Community, Food Service and Nutrition, Food and business Option. Students interested in becoming an RD should purse the Dietetics path to fulfill their DPD requirements. Courses included in the Dietetics track include Biology, Food Service Lab and Nutrition through the Lifespan.

First year applicants must submit an official undergraduate application and pay the fees. Transfer applicants or second degree students will meet with the DPD Director to review offical transcripts and determine remaining coursework.

    What to know about becoming a Registered Dietitian in in New Jersey

    To become an RDN in New Jersey many steps are required. The first step is to earn a degree in the area of nutrition and obtain a verification statement from ACEND. Currently, either a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an ACEND-accredited school will suffice. All ACEND- accredited programs include the required DPD coursework. However, beginning January 1, 2024 a masters degree will be the minimum requirement to sit for the CDR exam.

    Once the ACEND program is complete, graduates are eligible to apply for the dietetic internship. Both individuals who have earned a master’s degree or bachelor’s degree must complete the DI to become an RDN. ACEND also offers coordinate programs which combines the DPD coursework and internship.

    After completing the degree and internship, there is an exam administered by the CDR. Those who pass the exam will earn the official title of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

    Licensure for Dietitians and Nutritionists in New Jersey is not currently available. The Board of Dietetics and Nutrition is drafting regulations to outline the licensure process in the future. Once the regulations are adopted and instilled, licensure will be required in the state.
